Employee information, applying for a job

Extracare currently employs staff throughout the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and adjoining areas.  When a vacancy occurs it is usually advertised in the local newspaper designating the area where applicants should live. Owing to the short term nature of most of the services we provide we generally employ staff who live close to where services are needed. This avoids unnecessary travel if an employee’s hours reduce.

To be considered for employment you will need to have had experience in the provision of aged care services. This could be in a previous employment role or from some life experiences. A qualification in aged care is preferred. For employees who do not have their Certificate 3 we assist them to achieve this through a registered training organisation.

All staff are expected to provide the full range of services.

Even though our staff work individually and unsupervised they are proud of their reputation as a team and all employee’s are expected to measure up to our required standard.

Our usual hours that staff need to be available for work are from 7.30 am to 6.30 pm daily Monday to Friday and every second weekend.

The main requirement of the position as a carer is to follow the instructions you will be given and provide the service within the timeframe allocated. Working within our guidelines there will be occasions when you will need to think through various situations as they arise.

Most of the services we provide to clients are for a short term and the number of hours varies each week. We try to keep the number of hours up to the level preferred by each employee and to ensure that they have ongoing work every week.

Employees need to be available in the core hours to accept services that can become available at a day’s notice. Whenever possible we work around employee’s personal commitments.

Shifts throughout the day can sometimes be fragmented. We try to arrange blocks of work within a 10 kilometre radius of an employee’s home. The minimum service time is 15 minutes.  Services to a client can be for 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1 hour or more and these can be at different times of the day or may be once weekly or fortnightly. Overnight or 24 hour services are subject to agreement with the employee.

We do not provide medical services other than monitoring medication from a Webster Pack.

You will need a reliable car insured against Third Party Property damage. You will also need to have a Driver’s Licence. A Police Check relative to criminal offences is required prior to commencement of employment.
